How to Switch Displays
If you’re using a computer with more than one monitor, you may have noticed that your primary monitor is designated as “Monitor 1.” The other monitors are numbered sequentially from there. But what if you want to switch which monitor is “Monitor 1?” Maybe you want your laptop to be your primary monitor, or you want the monitor on the left to be “Monitor 1” instead of the one on the right. Whatever the reason, here’s how to change monitor 1 and 2:
- Right-click on your desktop and select “Display Settings.”
- In the “Multiple displays” drop-down menu, select the option for how you want your monitors to be arranged.
- If you want to manually arrange your monitors, click and drag each one into place until they’re arranged the way you want. Then, click “Make this my main display,” and follow with “Apply.”
Your monitors will briefly go black as they rearrange themselves, and then they’ll come back on in the new configuration. If you want to switch back to your original configuration, simply repeat these steps and select a different option in Step 2.
How to Change Monitor 1 and 2
Here’s how to change monitor 1 and 2 manually: to start, you’ll need to plug your monitors into different ports on your computer. This will ensure that they’re numbered correctly when you restart your computer. Once they’re plugged in, open the Start menu and search for “regedit.” This will open the Registry Editor, where you can make changes to your system settings.
In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\. Here, you should find “Configuration” which you should rename to “Configuration.old.” Do the same with “Connectivity” (Connectivity.old). Finally, save your changes and shut down your computer. Now is the time to plug in the monitor you want as the primary. If you turn your PC on, it should switch to your desired monitor. After that, you can plug in the rest of your screens.
And that’s how to change monitor 1 and 2! Whether you’re trying to make better use of limited desk space or just prefer a certain arrangement, it’s easy now! Just follow the steps above, and you’ll have your monitors rearranged in no time!
